The capital and administrative centre of the Moray area, Elgin has a long and dramatic history as evidenced by the magnificent ruins of its once powerful cathedral.
It is the main transport hub for Moray with regular bus services to the rural areas and a train service linking to Aberdeen and Inverness.
As the main town, there are numerous events taking place in Elgin throughout the year, including the Great Moray Bike Ride, which will take place in June each year, and coincides with the Moray Walking Festival.
All the large supermarkets and chain stores are in and around Elgin, and the historic High Street offers a range of smaller businesses, restaurants and cafes, as well as the area's only commercial cinema and several nightspots.
Top visitor attractions are the Johnston's Woollen Mill visitor centre which offers tours of the mill and a chance to browse through its extensive clothing shops, the Glen Moray malt whisky distillery, Elgin Museum,the Moray Motor Museum and the historic Elgin Cathedral.
